Jet Aviation Flight Services: Supporting a Seamless Aircraft Management Transition

Aircraft Management, Americas, Compliance, Flight Services, JAFS, Maintenance, Operations, Staffing, Trip Coordination

Established in 1985, Jet Aviation Flight Services (JAFS) has evolved into a comprehensive aircraft services organization supporting customers across aircraft management and charter. Today, its approximately 900 aviation professionals bring together decades of experience across a diverse fleet and a range of aircraft manufacturers.

Drawing on an integrated portfolio of aircraft management, operations, maintenance, staffing, regulatory compliance, trip coordination and client services, JAFS helps customers navigate every stage of the ownership journey — from initial delivery and operational entry to the ongoing management of their aircraft.

As new business aircraft from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) enter the U.S. market, JAFS is helping customers navigate the journey of bringing their aircraft into operation. The team gets involved well before an aircraft enters service, overseeing the transition from manufacturer to owner and ensuring the aircraft is ready to join the managed fleet.

With experience across a diverse range of aircraft and manufacturers, JAFS brings together the necessary people, services and expertise to facilitate a seamless transition into operation and provide responsive support throughout the aircraft’s lifecycle. In recent months, these capabilities have supported multiple new aircraft deliveries, contributing to a managed fleet of some 220 aircraft.

Throughout, JAFS remains focused on bringing together the experience, technical knowledge and operational capabilities required to support customers across the aircraft ownership journey. But what does that process involve, and what does it mean for customers purchasing a new aircraft?

We sat with Thomas Taveroni, Director of Aircraft Transitions and Conformity at Jet Aviation Flight Services, to learn more about the team’s role in bringing new aircraft into operation, the expertise required to support customers through the transition process, and the contribution this work makes to the broader aircraft ownership experience.

A career built on aircraft expertise: Thomas Taveroni, Director of Aircraft Transitions and Conformity

Tell us about your journey to your current role.

I joined Jet Aviation in 1990 as a maintenance technician. Today, I’m serving as Director of Aircraft Transitions and Conformity, leading the team responsible for conformity across Part 91 and Part 135 operations.
Jet Aviation has always been committed to the highest standards. It was a fantastic place to learn and develop a deep expertise across multiple aircraft types, and different positions. It was an exciting opportunity for anyone looking to advance their career, and I’m grateful to have been able to take it. Jet Aviation provided a strong foundation and a supportive environment, and that continues today.

At the core we are always working closely with aircraft owners and crews to understand their aircraft, and their specific needs of that aircraft. Then we tailor our services to meet those. It’s personal. We need to know that aircraft inside out, and provide the expertise and service that ensure we are our customers’ trusted partner in its operation.

What is your role in supporting the managed customer experience?

My role encompasses three key areas: conformity, aircraft transactions and completions monitoring. Each serves a different purpose, but all are focused on protecting the customer’s interests and ensuring an aircraft meets their expectations.

“This in-house expertise gives customers an additional layer of oversight and helps ensure that potential issues are identified before the aircraft enters our fleet.”

The first area of conformity, which involves evaluating an aircraft to verify that its configuration, equipment, maintenance records and documentation align with the applicable requirements and standards for its intended operation. For customers operating under Part 91 or Part 135, this process helps establish that the aircraft is properly documented, meets the relevant regulatory requirements, and is ready to be incorporated into our management portfolio. We review the aircraft’s records and history, assess its overall condition, and identify any outstanding items that need to be addressed. This in-house expertise gives customers an additional layer of oversight and helps ensure that potential issues are identified before the aircraft enters our fleet. It also gives our internal teams the information they need to take responsibility for the aircraft and seamlessly support its ongoing operation.

The second area is aircraft transactions, which involves supporting managed customers through the purchase and sale of aircraft. Our knowledge of aircraft, their maintenance histories and their technical requirements helps customers navigate these transactions with a clear understanding of what they are buying or selling and what may need attention along the way.

The third area is completions monitoring, which involves overseeing an aircraft’s journey from the manufacturer through its final stages of production and delivery. We represent the customer’s interests throughout that process, working with the manufacturer to monitor the aircraft’s progress and ensure it is completed according to the agreed specifications, overseeing details such as interior configuration, seating, paint scheme, equipment installation, testing and final acceptance. Offering this service as part of our tailored portfolio enables us to truly support our customers from the very first stages of aircraft ownership and operation.

JAFS has welcomed a number of new-to-service aircraft into the fleet this year. Tell us more about what that means for you and the team.

It means a lot of close collaboration with the customer, and with our other in-house experts. You’re following the aircraft through multiple stages of production, coordinating with different parties, performing in-person observations as needed, reviewing extensive documentation and maintaining a detailed understanding of the aircraft and its development. You have to know that aircraft inside and out. You’re acting as the customer’s trusted representative and technical resource throughout the process.

Documentation is another critical component. We compile and maintain a comprehensive record of the aircraft’s configuration, equipment, systems and relevant documentation throughout its completion. By the time the aircraft is delivered, we have established an important technical reference that can be handed over to our maintenance personnel, giving them the information they need to understand the aircraft and support its continued operation.

We typically oversee approximately four aircraft per quarter, and when you consider the years of combined experience across the Jet Aviation team, the depth of knowledge we bring is considerable. My background in maintenance has been particularly valuable because it gives me the technical foundation to understand the aircraft, recognize potential issues and ask the right questions throughout the process to support the customer and ensure entry into service is seamless.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing a new aircraft progress through production and watching all the individual elements come together. You see the aircraft take shape, from the paint scheme and interior to the installation of seats and equipment, and ultimately through the manufacturer’s acceptance process and delivery.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to guide an aircraft through that journey, from specification and build to paint, interior and final delivery.”

It’s incredibly rewarding to guide an aircraft through that journey, from specification and build to paint, interior and final delivery. Every aircraft is different, and each brings its own requirements and challenges. Our job is to help ensure the finished product reflects what the customer expects.

What makes this work particularly interesting is how closely our responsibilities connect with the rest of JAFS. The conformity and completions processes involve collaboration across multiple teams, including maintenance, in-flight services, scheduling, dispatch, flight operations and our flight crews. Each team brings a different area of expertise, and that collaboration is essential to preparing an aircraft for its new owner and ensuring a smooth transition into our fleet.

We are working toward a shared goal: delivering an aircraft that meets the customer’s expectations while giving our operational teams the information and support they need to do their jobs effectively. Our work helps the crew focus on what they do best: delivering a safe, seamless and exceptional experience for the customer.

That teamwork is one of the things I appreciate most about Jet Aviation Flight Services. We have experts across so many different disciplines, and bringing their knowledge together is what makes the process work.

It’s also rewarding to see the relationships continue beyond delivery. Once an aircraft joins our fleet, our work doesn’t necessarily end. Customers often return to us when purchasing another aircraft because they value the experience and oversight we provide throughout the completion process. I’m currently working on my third aircraft with one particular customer, which speaks to the trust we’ve built and the value of maintaining those relationships.
