Implementation of SMS regulatory structures
In 2009, Jet Aviation's EMEA & Asia charter operation took the first big steps in the implementation of Safety Management System (SMS) regulatory structures, to help facilitate the proactive identification of hazards and maximize the development of a new safety culture throughout the entire company. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) now recommends that all aviation authorities implement SMS regulatory structures. It also requires the entire aviation industry to put SMS in place as an extra layer of protection to help save lives.
The implementation of SMS commenced in Switzerland in 2008. Clear requirements on the roll-out of the implementation has been established by the Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA).
Key elements of SMS are:
- A non-punitive safety reporting policy and culture
- Proactive hazard identification
- Risk management
- Emergency preparedness and response
- Management of change
- Performance measurement and continuous improvement
